As part of the study of COVID-19, the research group found weak spots in the virus’s surface. According to experts, this discovery will increase the chances for the scientific community to create a highly effective vaccine against the novel coronavirus infection. Earlier, scientists have already established that the COVID-19 surface contains a large number of proteins in the form of spikes. With the aid of latter the virus attaches to the cells’ walls and then gets inside.The experts emphasize that there are specific polysaccharides on these spikes – glycans. It is these polysaccharides that help viral proteins disguise themselves and do not allow the immune system to recognize COVID-19.However, further research has made it possible for biologists to map out the structure of glycans and identify their weak points that can be targeted by an antiviral drug. According to the authors of this discovery, it will be of great help for scientists in terms of developing a vaccine against the virus.It is also said the density of polysaccharides on coronavirus’s spikes is significantly lower than that of HIV. Therefore, its surface is not able to create the same amount of obstacles to the immune system and remains vulnerable to immune response.
