Russian authorities have changed the norms for the design of federal court buildings which will replace metal cages for defendants in courtrooms with bulletproof glass docks.

Russian courts have decided to finally abandon the detention of defendants in “cages.”

The change in the standards of court buildings’ design is part of measures to develop the judicial system in Russia, said the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation. As reported by Znak.com, among other things, it involves “humanization of the environment” which includes the replacement of metal cages with enclosures made of bulletproof glass that are used in many EU countries.

Back in 2014, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that putting defendants in “cages” was unacceptable. The Strasbourg Court is now considering about 900 complaints from Russian citizens about being kept “behind bars” during court hearings.
