State Duma Deputy Gennady Onishchenko, an expert in preventive medicine, has highly praised the level of competence of Dr. Viktor Maleyev, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who predicts the ending of the COVID-2019 epidemic in Russia, but said that he could not agree with his predictions.

Gennady Onishchenko, who had previously served as chief sanitary inspector of Russia, urged the regional authorities to refrain from shutting down local schools in solidarity with Moscow’s ones. In addition, Onishchenko cast doubts over Dr. Maleyev’s words, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who had predicted the end of the COVID-19 epidemic in June.

Onishchenko praised the level of Maleyev’s competence but stressed that he could not agree with his predictions about the end of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia.

“The epidemic is not likely to be over in June,” said Onishchenko. “We will put period to this issue only when the last person diagnosed with COVID-19 recovers and a couple more weeks pass after that. Let us not set any specific dates now but just keep working.

“Again, this problem is highly exaggerated,” the expert said. “A total of only 1.5 mln people are diagnosed with the virus all over the world. At the same time, there are up to 400 mln cases annually during the worst flu epidemic which claims the lives of 200,000 to up to 700,000 people.”
