“It is worth noting that after occupying the post of Deputy to Nikolai Patrushev, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Medvedev got control over Russia’s defense and security departments,” said Alexei Venediktov. “The post of Prime Minister gave no opportunity of this kind.”
The figure of Dmitry Medvedev, who resigned from the post of Prime Minister, should not be ignored against the background of the upcoming transit of power. According to Alexei Venediktov, the editor-in-chief of the Echo of Moscow radio station, Medvedev has been released to inactive duty, but he is still considered as an official with the highest loyalty to Vladimir Putin. Venediktov added that in his new office, Medvedev exercises control over the Russian security, defense and law enforcement agencies. These powers and authority were unavailable for him while in the position of Prime Minister.
“Through his resignation Medvedev has been assigned standby duties,” said Alexei Venediktov. “He is absolutely loyal to the Russian President. Vladimir Putin really believes so. If someone asked me who Putin would choose as his successor today, I would say that Medvedev would get the top place on the list among the probable three or four contenders. Medvedev is the main candidate for Russian Presidency in the future.
“Obviously, no one is thinking about a successor. However, if the situation required it, it would be Medvedev. In fact, he was simply redeployed to the reserve. It is worth noting that by taking up the post of Deputy of Nikolai Patrushev, Medvedev got control over the defense and security departments in Russia. The post of Prime Minister gave no opportunity of this kind.”
